Environmentally Conscious Cement Alternative 'Pozzotive' Made from Recycled Glass
An American based company is helping manufacturers and contractors reach their clean energy goals through an innovative method of creating construction materials. Urban Mining CT has developed a concrete additive made of recycled glass.
The process involves breaking down, cleaning, and then transforming glass into a product called ‘Pozzotive’.
Pozzotive is a ground glass pozzolan that can reduce harmful embodied Co2 when added to concrete mix in place of other compounds, such as cement.
Pozzotive recently won an “Innovative Product Award” from the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association and has been used in high-profile construction developments in New York and Bristol.
The product was developed in 2001, by Louis Grasso and his uncle, Patrick.
Grasso states that Possotive “creates stronger, longer-lasting concrete while reducing carbon dioxide emissions generated in the production of cement, on an almost ton-for-ton basis.”
“Pozzotive can replace up to 50% of the concrete mix at a lower environmental cost” Grasso said.
“Using Pozzotive to replace cement in concrete is five times more impactful in reducing global CO2 emissions than repurposing the glass back into bottles or fiberglass.”
Urban Mining uses patented technology to separate glass from other materials, and then clean it using a “low-embodied carbon process.”
It then mills the glass to a fine powder, with up to 99.7% purity.
It is reported that 10,500 tons of Pozzotive was sold since July 2023, with annual sales predicted to surpass 18,000 tons.
This equates to more than 72 million glass bottles recycled.
