Kwinana's Lithium Hydroxide Refinery: In Operation!

01st September 2021

A press release by IGO Limited has announced a leap in progress for Australia's first lithium hydroxide facility.

The first lithium hydroxide has been produced (ahead of schedule!).

With this initial milestone achieved, the focus will be shifted to fine-tuning and progressively improving product quality to a battery-grade product. As said in the release, it is expected the saleable product will be produced in the December quarter and that battery grade production for certification will be produced in the March 2022 quarter.

IGO Limited Managing Director and CEO, Peter Bradford showed support and gratitude towards the milestone saying, “The first production of lithium hydroxide is the first step of a journey but nevertheless represents a key milestone for the Lithium joint venture. We are therefore delighted to have achieved this first important step in the commissioning of Train 1 and to have done so ahead of the internal schedule developed earlier this year. We congratulate the Kwinana team on this milestone and their progress over the last few months," he said.

The strong demand for lithium in the global market today reinforces the strategic nature of Kwinana which, is rapidly evolving into a globally significant lithium operation catering to the specific needs of premium lithium-ion battery manufacturers. The Australasian Pozzolan Association looks forward to seeing what the future holds for this project, and congratulates all involved with this tremendous achievement.
